Prof. Alan Porter, Georgia Tech

 December 3, 2010, Professor Alan Porter from Georgia Institute of Technology was invited to give a lecture entitled "Tech Mining for Research Assessment & Forecasting". The lecture was given in English, and partially translated and explained by Dr. Guo Ying. SME teachers and fellow students as well as graduate students from the School of Library and Information attended the lecture.
Speaker Profile:
  Prof. Alan Porter graduated from the School of Chemical Engineering, California Institute of Technology in 1967, received Ph.D. in engineering psychology from University of California-Los Angeles in 1972; In 1972-1974 he taught at the University of Washington, in 1975 he joined the School of Industrial and Systems Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, and teach till now. He is also a professor at the School of Public Policy, Georgia Institute of Technology, and in charge of the Technology Policy and Evaluation Center. In 1991 to 1993 he served as Georgia Tech's Executive Director of Technology Management program.
Professor Alan Porter is a global leader in utilizing text mining technology for technology forecasting and assessment. His areas of expertise include technology opportunity analysis, technology management, technology forecasting and assessment. The current research is focused on technology opportunities analysis, in particular, the use of data provided by the database approach to computer-aided mining and analysis of information.
