Prof. Zhang Yin, the University of Dundee, Talks on Poverty

On the afternoon of March 29, 2017, Dr. Zhang Yin, an assistant professor at the School of Business at Dundee University, UK, visited our school and gave an academic report entitled "Looking submitted income: An application of multidimensional poverty measurement to China". The report was hosted by associate professor Zhang Lingxiang of the Department of International Trade and Finance.
The traditional measurement of poverty is from the one-dimensional perspective of income. Dr. Zhang's paper instead uses income, education, health and other multi-dimensional indicators to measure the problem of poverty, adopting CHNS survey data and Watts index to measure China's poverty in 1989 and 2000, and analyze in breakdown the factors of poverty decline. The results show that the decline of poverty in China is mainly due to the increase of income, education and health.
A number of teachers and students from the  Department of International Trade and Finance and Department of Applied Economics participated in the academic report. During the report, the teachers and students had a lively discussion on poverty issue with Dr. Zhang Yin.
