Online healthcare platforms are important in improving healthcare accessibility and equity. To address information asymmetry and motivate leading doctors to improve their practices, online healthcare platforms have introduced platform endorsement, where platforms endorse a selective set of doctors to highlight their exceptional performance. Using detailed data from a leading online healthcare platform in China, we investigate the impact of platform endorsement by ex- ploiting a quasi-experiment of the platform’s “Good Doctors of the Year” endorsement program. We find that platform endorsement boosts demand for endorsed doctors, who respond by in- creasing prices and quantity provision of paid services while upholding service quality. However, this leads to a decrease in free services provision by endorsed doctors, disadvantaging under- privileged patients. These findings highlight the need for platforms and policymakers to be aware of the distributional effect on different groups of consumers that may arise from platform endorsement, particularly in sectors with significant societal implications such as healthcare.

傅虹橋，北京大學(xué)公共衛(wèi)生學(xué)院衛(wèi)生政策與管理系副主任，副研究員、博士生導(dǎo)師。主要研究領(lǐng)域包括：衛(wèi)生經(jīng)濟(jì)、衛(wèi)生政策、互聯(lián)網(wǎng)+醫(yī)療健康服務(wù)創(chuàng)新等。以第一作者或通訊作者身份累計(jì)國內(nèi)外期刊發(fā)表30余篇，包括 Lancet Public Health, Lancet Regional Health- Western Pacific, Social Science & Medicine等衛(wèi)生政策國際頂級(jí)和權(quán)威期刊。主持國家自然科學(xué)基金青年項(xiàng)目、國家社科基金重大項(xiàng)目子課題、教育部人文社會(huì)科學(xué)研究基金青年項(xiàng)目等項(xiàng)目，并承擔(dān)國務(wù)院研究室、國家醫(yī)保局等部門委托的衛(wèi)生政策橫向課題和咨詢項(xiàng)目十余項(xiàng)。目前兼任中國衛(wèi)生經(jīng)濟(jì)學(xué)會(huì)醫(yī)療保險(xiǎn)專委會(huì)秘書長、銀川互聯(lián)網(wǎng)+醫(yī)療健康協(xié)會(huì)秘書長、廣東省醫(yī)改咨詢專家等職。以第一完成人獲北京市第十七屆哲學(xué)社會(huì)科學(xué)優(yōu)秀成果獎(jiǎng)二等獎(jiǎng)、國家醫(yī)療保障研究院2021年開放性課題優(yōu)秀成果獎(jiǎng)。
