內容介紹:
Hospitals routinely outsource patient care services to effectively manage patient needs while at the same time garnering improved financial performance. However, extant research provides limited insight into the outcomes of patient service outsourcing in hospitals. The present study investigates the influence of hospital service outsourcing emphasis on patient care effectiveness and financial performance. It utilizes data obtained from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) for a comprehensive set of hospitals in the United States over a 14-year period. Analysis confirms that higher service outsourcing emphasis improves the operating margins of hospitals, but also increases patient length of stay in the hospitals – indicating lower patient care effectiveness. Lower patient care effectiveness in turn is observed to attenuate some of the financial gains from outsourcing. Theory and results further highlight capacity utilization of hospitals as a key boundary condition in these relationships. Together, these findings provide important guidelines to hospital managers regarding their patient care outsourcing strategy.
